Brow Head, 'Empress Villas,' was originally owned by Vickers Armstrong, (now known as BAE Systems) & once housed top management & other famous people such as Barnes Wallace, the man who created the 'bouncing bomb'. Barnes Wallace stayed in Barrow-in-Furness during the early war years. By popular demand, we now enforce a no smoking policy within the hotel guest rooms/main public areas. Smoking on the premises is no longer allowed, but smoking in the foyer/outside the main entrance is still permitted. Barrow is a Victorian town surrounded by beaches and inspiring scenery. All available locally: golf courses, pedestrianised shopping precinct, The Dock Museum and a large indoor market open Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat. The South Lakes Wild Animal Park is one of Europe's leading conservation zoos, located in Dalton-in-Furness, a few miles away. You could also visit the ruins of St. Mary of Furnesia, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1127, or Piel Castle, built in the 14th Century, which is accessible via the Roa Island ferry service. Nearby Ulverston is home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum & Manjushri Mahayana Buddhist Centre at Coniston Head Priory. Established in 1975 as part of the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition, it is now the centre of the New Kadampa Tradition. Housed in a 19th century mock-Gothic building (built on the site of an Augustinian Priory) it has 70 acres of grounds. The design of the new temple is based on a mandala with 4 doorways & 3 tiers. Cycling W2W - (Walney to Wear) The route runs between Walney Island on Cumbria's Irish Sea coast, where we are situated, to where the River Wear flows into the North Sea at Sunderland. We are also conveniently situated for Furness General Hospital, whether you are a budding doctor making your final examinations, or just wanting to visit family or friends. Bus route 1 & 1A can take you from Brow Head to FGH.
